About Homeopathy• Principles of Healing • What Can it Treat?
Homeopathy was founded as an organized system of medicine, more than two hundred years ago by German physician and chemist Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1853).
Hippocrates (460-350 B.C.), known as the father of medicine, first observed this phenomenon of healing and wrote, “By similar things a disease is produced and through the application of the like is cured.”
Aristotle (384-322 B.C.) also knew this principle of nature and stated, ”Often the simile acts upon the simile.”
Mahatma Gandhi said; “Homeopathy cures a greater percentage of cases than any other method of treatment. It is the latest and refined method of treating patients economically and non-violently.”
“Like Cures Like”
Homeopathic medicines are prescribed according to the Law of Similars. What a substance can cause in a healthy person, it can cure those same symptoms in a sick person. This natural principle allows Homeopaths to correct symptoms of ill-health with substances that produce similar symptoms when tested on a healthy person. This approach is based on a simple observation that has been verified in the successful treatment of millions of people around the world.
An example of this is a person with arthritis in whom the joints are hot, red and swollen with stinging, burning pain similar to a bee sting. Their condition is resolved using Apis-Mellifica, a homeopathic remedy derived from bee venom. Similarly, just as when you peel an onion your eyes can burn, water and itch, you may also sneeze and your nose may become runny. If you had these symptoms during a cold or allergy attack—watery, burning eyes, sneezing, and runny nose— Allium-Cepa, a homeopathic remedy from red onion, would quickly help your body heal.
Homeopathy views disease holistically. A person’s illness is understood as intimately linked to their individual nature and their life. Physical, emotional and mental symptoms are given equal attention. Many people who seek homeopathic treatment have a complexity of health issues. Holistic means that, for example, someone’s anxiety is not seen as being separate from their mentrual issues, migraines and heartburn. Unlike allopathic medicine, homeopathy treats the totality of symptoms as opposed to individual organ systems or body parts. To effect healing you must treat the person as a whole, their body, mind and emotions.
A single Homeopathic remedy is carefully selected to match the individual and their exact symptoms. The homeopath must be systematic and precise in their prescription. The effectiveness of a remedy depends upon how accurately it matches the totality of the person’s illness.
Symptoms are the Body’s Attempt to Heal Itself
Symptoms are the language of disease. They are a result of an underlying energetic imbalance and are the body’s adaptive attempt to heal itself. Homeopathy treats the underlying or root cause by stimulating the body to heal itself. This is accomplished by employing Homeopathic remedies that match a person’s symptom totality rather than suppressing them using allopathic medications.
Who and What Can Homeopathy Treat?
Potentially Everyone can be helped. Rather than viewing a person’s condition as a collection of separate diseases, each addressed with its own medications and treatments, Homeopathy understands dis-ease as the result of an underlying imbalance of life energy or Vital Force. Homeopathy works by balancing this underlying energetic disturbance, stimulating the body’s ability to heal itself and return to its natural state of health.
Some conditions commonly treated with Homeopathy:
Recurrent respiratory, sinus, & ear infections, acute colds, influenza, bedwetting, teeting, colic, pre and post-natal complaints, asthma, allergies, eczema, acne, environmental sensitivities, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, ADHD, OCD, menstrual and menopausal complaints, hormonal issues, headaches/migraines, IBS, heartburn & other digestive disorders, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, conditions without a clear medical diagnosis, behavioral problems/issues in children and adolescents, desire to minimize the use of allopathic medicaitons. These are more typically straightforward to treat.
Many people also come to homeopathy for deep conditions such as eating disorders, glaucoma, heart disease, infertility, inflammatory bowel disease, auto-immune disorders, including situations in which conventional therapies fall short.
Reversing illness takes time relative to the depth and chronicity of the pathology.
Some people seek homeopathic treatment as a means to optimizing their health and decreasing susceptibility to illness. While homeopathy can work as a complement to conventional care, Classical Homeopathy aims to help people attain a level of health where they are no longer dependent on medicines, special diets, nutritional supplements or other therapies.
What Are Homeopathic Remedies?
Homeopathic remedies are made from natural substances, such as plants and minerals. They are prepared in FDA-approved laboratories (www.hahnemannlabs.com) through a specific process of repeated dilution and agitation, called potenization. This preparation enables the energetic properties of a substance to be harnessed for healing without the toxicity. Homeopathic remedies are completely safe, free of side effects or toxicity and can be taken with allopathic medications. They are safe for children, pregnant women, seniors and animals. They can be safely prescribed in conjunction with allopathic medicines as they act on the Vital Force, or energetic level of the individual.
Nano-Pharmacology means that substances which may be toxic in large amounts can be curative when given in extremely dilute amounts, to the point at which there are no particles of the actual substance.
Homeopathic Proving is a process by which the actions or effects of a homeopathic remedy from a natural substance are systematically tested on healthy human volunteers and meticulously documented. Many of the homeopathic remedies most commonly used today were proved more than 200 years ago by Dr. Hahnemann. This means there are vast data bases of clinical data available to todays homepaths.
The Materia Medica
is the encyclopedia/database of each remedy’s precise physical and mental effects. It is used by homeopaths in order to match the effects of a medicine with the unique and specific symptoms and experience of an individual. Several thousand remedies are currently included in the Materia Medica, which continues to expand as homeopaths around the world identify and test new substances to determine their healing properties. Many of the remedies that were proved by Hahnemann over two hundred years ago continue to be the most commonly used by today’s homeopaths.
Dr. Samuel Hahnemann is recognized as a great historical figure due to his role in developing homeopathy as a systematic healing art. The original edition of his text, The Organon of Medicine, can be viewed today in the library of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. Homeopathy became well recognized during the Asiatic Cholera Epidemic of 1831. Records from that time document that under homeopathic treatment, mortality was between two and twenty percent while conventional treatment led to a mortality of over fifty percent. In the year 1900 approximately 400 million people received homeopathic treatment.
Homeopathy declined in the United States with the emergence of the pharmaceutical industry and patent medicines. Since the 1970s there has been a renewed interest and steady increase in the science and practice of Homeopathy in America as more and more people appreciate the value of this natural, low cost, non-toxic approach to healing the whole person.
